Visiting 'the gallery' |
#Inspiredby the Curated Exhibition |
The work I’m doing is all about giving the children the opportunity to be creative and play with drawing and painting. We paint to music and doodle pictures of nothing in particular. Then we look round the virtual gallery and talk about what we like and don’t like.
I start by getting them to say what catches their eye. What do you notice? Some children naturally look for narrative. A picture of a woman reading a book caught one girl’s eye. “I like this - it’s a Mermaid reading a book” “Oh, what do you think the books about?” “Magic” One of the boys joined in. “It’s so she can get a trident and control the sea” |
I used https://artuk.org/# to create my own curated gallery from the collection at the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle. This is one of the Cultural venues we would have visited if we weren't under Covid restrictions. I chose some 'typical' paintings you'd expect to find in a gallery - a portrait of a man from the past, a still life, a landscape, a religious scene and some more modern, abstract work. I added a few paintings of local interest - the great fire of Newcastle, a street scene of a fish and chip shop, some local hero's - Grace Darling and Robert Stevenson. I showed each group round the exhibition and we talked about what they liked and what they didn't. I then made a second curated collection of the paintings that stood out for them. You can find the collection on Art.Uk under curations and search for Inspired by (or click this link)
